THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
-------------------
(for September 12, 1992)
Lately, there's been alot of pessimism about the ability of
the human mind to keep pace across the chessboard with the
computer. It seems as though one can hardly pick up a
magazine without reading an article lamenting over the mind's
frailties and extolling the virtues of the computer chip.
The calculating power of the computer is undeniable. In fact,
the founders of Deep Thought, the world's strongest chess-
playing machine, predicted during a recent press conference
in New York City, that DT would possess sufficient processing
power by 1994 to defeat the best human player.
But, the mind has equally awesome capabilities. Fortunately
for us humans, chess is a multi-dimensional game that allows
us to make use of our varied mental skills. What we may lack
in calculating ability can often be made up through
creativity.
So what do you do if your next opponent turns out to have a
monitor for a head and a keyboard for hands? Judging by the
results achieved by that septuagenerian Grandmaster, David
Bronstein, in the Aegon Man vs. Machine Tournament held at
the Hague during May, maybe the best way to beat a computer
might be to use a little imagination.
Bronstein, who tied a match against Botvinnik for the World
Championship some 30 years ago and still considered to be one
of the game's most creative talents, was the only competitor
at the Hague to finish 6-0. In the final standings, the men
finished first though seventh; the best of the 24 machines
could do no better than eighth place.
Typical of Bronstein's play in the tournament was his Evans
Gambit crush of the Heuristic Alpha software. By sacrificing
a Pawn or two here and there, he was often able to force
unclear positions--and take the computer's raw calculating
ability out of the game.
